Akkanna Madanna Bonalu an example of “Ganga Jamuna Tehzeeb”
- Hyderabad unique tradition to foster bonding
The Akkanna Madanna temple in the Old City of Hyderabad is an example of the Hyderabad’s ‘Ganga Jamuna Tehzeeb, depicting the secular harmony, unique to the City. The Bonalu festivities at the Akkanna Madanna temple start with offering by the temple committee at a small Dargah located in front of the historic temple.

Before the preparations for the Bonalu at the temple begin, the committee offers a Chadar at the Dargah, paint it green and decorate it with lights. The Dargah is decorated and lit up all 10-days of the Bonalu celebrations.

This year Home minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy offered a chadar at the shrine on behalf of the temple committee. This is not the only symbol of brotherhood between the two religions, The elephant, Rajani which carries the ‘Ghatam’ is provided by the Nizam Trust since several years. The elephant Rajani is also used for carrying the Bibi-ka-Alam,” he said.
