The Art of Living has taken up several holistic initiatives to create a climate for environment sustainability and to encourage practices that nurture it. As part of its initiative for rural development, Art of Living Coimbatore launched a project to clean the Rajavaikal Canal.

The mainstay of the five villages ( Thenkarai ,Thalliyur , Chithrai chavadi , Thondamuthur and Vedapaati ) in this area is agriculture. They have been affected by severe drought coupled with shortage of drinking water, due to depleted underground water levels.

Art Of Living volunteers on hearing of the problems faced by the farmers in these villages, conducted a survey to assess the existing situation. They went on to submit a proposal to the Public Works Department which granted them permission to clean the 13 km long canal.

The project started on May 23rd, 2017 and with the efforts of more than 100 volunteers, who toiled day and night, the cleaning was completed by 6th June, 2017. Additionally, an ancient check dam was also desilted to a depth of 1 metre. These activities have helped to raise groundwater levels and also to take water to seven major ponds in the area (Narashyampathi kullam, Puthukullam, Vedapattikullam , Krishnampathikullam, Muthuannankullam, Chinthamanikullam and Kollarampathi kullam). Cleaning up of 11.5 km of the canal now helps provide irrigation to about 3000 acres of land.

“Due to the cleaning of the canal, water is not stagnating but flowing unhindered through the agricultural land and there is no wastage of water either,” says Nachimuthu, a farmer from Sundapalyam, expressing happiness at the completion of the project.

The Art of Living’s River Rejuvenation efforts are active in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and volunteers are working to revive 30 rivers in these 4 states. Over 7 lakh people from 565 villages are today enjoying the benefits of this extensive project.
