First Sikh Guru gave a message of Oneness

Last year, on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Devji and 50th Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev University, Gurudev was invited to deliver the keynote address. He also visited the Shri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), where he equated Shri Guru Nanak Devji’s knowledge and wisdom as being the sixth river that has flown perenially for the last 550 years from Punjab. Gurudev mentioned that the first Sikh Guru gave a message of oneness at a time when evils of casteism, gender inequality, and degradation of human values prevailed.

The community has been at the forefront of spreading the message for peace and gender equality. In 2007, the Honorable Jathedar of Shri Akal Takhat had provided full support to The Art of Living and United Nation’s initiative Beti Sneh Sanjivani Yatra, a statewide campaign to protect the girl child and improve sex ratio.

Lives and knowledge of the Ten Sikh Gurus

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on various fora has time and again supported the idea that more people and youngsters should know about the lives and knowledge of the Ten Sikh Gurus, which invokes valor, human values, and devotion. In 2005, Gurudev also advocated for the repair of the holy Gurudwara during his visit to Afghanistan, where Guru Nanak Devji is said to have set foot.

In 2004, Gurudev was warmly invited to Amritsar for the Prakash Utsav, grand celebration of the 400th anniversary of the installation of Shri Guru Granth Sahib.

“Of all the rishis, sages, saints, and seers who have blessed this planet, Shri Guru Nanak Devji has a unique place. He has placed forth the essence of all the scriptures in the simplest words that even a common man can understand and absorb. Guru Nanak Devji has given his blessed words (Bani) for man to lead a beautiful life,” Gurudev had said in 2004 while giving a discourse on the beauty of Japji Sahib on an invitation from Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, “The knowledge (Bani) that comes from experience, has depth and it impacts others. And that knowledge lives for thousands of years because it is the word of the Divine. Such knowledge should be listened to, with great sincerity, honor, and devotion. When you consider this knowledge as sacred, then life becomes sacred.”

As part of the inauguration of Guru Nanak Chair For Studies In Universal Advancement and International Seminar on Shri Guru Nanak Devji’s philosphy and UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, Gurudev will share the relevance of teachings of the great leader and the need to preserve the teachings for coming generations.
