Das Mahavida : Maa Kali

Maa Kali is the first of the Das Mahavidya and is the fiercest aspect of Maa Durga. Kali is the Goddess of time and change. She presides over the time before the creation of the universe.

She is represented as the consort of Lord Shiva. Her abode is the cremation grounds and her weapons are the Kripana and Trishul. As per the Devi Mahatmya, Devi Kali appeared out of Goddess Durga to defeat the demon Raktabija. Raktabija, which means the seed of blood, was able to clone himself out of the blood dripping on the ground.

Das Mahavidya : Maa Tara

Maa Tara is the 2nd of the 10 Mahavidya. Tara means star and Maa is seen as a beautiful but perpetually self-combusting. Hence Goddess Tara is perceived as the personification of unquenchable hunger that propels the life.

Represented by the planet Jupiter, Maa Tara is the Goddess who offers ultimate knowledge and gives salvation. She is also known as Neel Saraswati. Her weapons are the Khadga, Sword and scissors.

Das Mahavidya : Maa Shodashi

Maa Shodashi is the 3rd Mahavidya, also known as Tripura Sundari. As the name suggests Goddess Shodashi is the most beautiful in all three worlds. In the Mahavidya, She represents Goddess Parvati or also known as Tantric Parvati.

She is also known as Lalita and Rajarajeshwari. She is represented as a 16 year old girl and is believed to embody 16 types of desires. The Mantra to worship Maa Shodashi also consists of 16 syllables. Tripura Sundari is also worshipped as the Shri Yantra.

Das Mahavidya : Maa Bhuvaneshvari

Maa Bhuvaneshvari is the 4th of the 10 Mahavidya Goddesses. She is also known as World Mother and personifies the whole universe. As Her name suggests she is the queen of all the worlds and rules the whole universe. She relates to Tripura Sundari in many aspects.

Bhuvaneshvari is known as Adi Shakti i.e. one of the earliest forms of Shakti. In Her Saguna Rupa, Maa Bhuvaneshvari is known as Parvati. In appearance Maa Bhuvaneshvari resembles Tripura Sundari. Bhuvaneshvari is the color of the rising sun with the crescent moon in her hair.

Das Mahavidya : Maa Bhairavi

Maa Bhairavi is the 5th of the 10 Mahavidya. Bhairavi is a fierce and terrifying aspect of the Goddess and in nature is hardly indistinguishable from Kali. Maa Bhairavi is the consort of Bhairava which is the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with the annihilation.

Maa Bhairavi is seen mainly as Chandi in the Durga Saptashati who slays Chanda and Munda. Maa Bhairavi is portrayed with two strikingly different iconographies. In one Maa Bhairavi has resemblance with Maa Kali. In the other iconography, Maa Bhairavi resembles Maa Parvati.

Das Mahavidya : Maa Chhinnamasta

Maa Chhinnamasta is the 6th of the 10 Mahavidya and She is known as the self-decapitated Goddess. She is also known as Prachanda Chandika. There are several legends about her origin. However most of them suggest that she beheaded herself to accomplish a greater and noble cause.

The iconography of Chhinnamasta is fearsome. The self-decapitated Goddess holds her own severed head in 1 hand and holds a scimitar in the other hand. Three jets of blood spurt out of her bleeding neck and are drunk by her severed head and two female attendants, Dakini and Varnini.
