Flowers in Hindu Weddings: Use and Significance

Hindu weddings are always a pompous as well as a religious affair. Every ritual from Dwarpuja to Jaimala to Pheras is important in Hindu Wedding .But what makes more beautiful this union is the use of beautiful flowers to decorate the venue and in various wedding rituals.

Flowers are a key part of the decoration and ritual involved in Hindu wedding. Some flowers are closely associated with Hindu weddings due to their meaning in the culture. Flowers like Marigold,Roses and Jasmine are commonly used in Hindu weddings.

Hindu weddings are officiated under a mandap that is a four pillared canopy. This mandap is lavishly decorated by bright, fresh flowers in shades of yellow, red and orange. Red is considered holy colour and Hindu brides wear traditional dress in red as it symbolises purity, protection and bravery. The tents or Shamiyanas or the wedding hall as well the main door is all decorated with fresh flowers. Besides mandap and the wedding hall , flowers form part of various wedding rituals. 



A traditional part of Hindu wedding is when a bride and a groom exchange floral garlands. This ritual is called Jaimala or Varmala. These garlands are intricately woven of blossoming flowers usually jasmine, roses and marigolds. This jaimala is of same significance as that of ring exchange in western wedding ceremonies. Marigolds :

Both yellow and orange marigolds are heavily used in Hindu wedding decorations as they add a touch of colour to the venue and a sweet smell. Marigolds signifies prosperity and wisdom according to Hindu scriptures. Others belief that marigold ward off evil spirits and symbolises blessings from the gods for the newly wed couple.

Jasmines: 

Flowers in Hindu WeddingsWhite jasmine is also frequently used in Hindu weddings. Brides often wear it in their hair. In addition to its sweet fragrance, jasmine symbolises good luck and wearing them is meant to bring prosperity and future success. These flowers also stand for purity and happiness. Jasmine are also considered auspicious in many other countries across the world.

Roses:

Hindu weddings are incomplete without roses. They form part of floral displays at mandap or stage. They are also woven along with marigold in garland that is exchanged by bride and groom. Red roses signify passionate love, pink for happiness, white for purity and yellow for both friendship and happiness. Pure rose garlands, rose bouquets as well as mixed flower displays are quite common and eye catchy too.
