He is a guru, who doesn’t like to proclaim himself in the traditional sense as sadguru or spiritual leader. He prefers to be simple, realistic and down-to-earth person who would project himself as the “Sadhu in a complex world.” He is Om Swami. He is the modern guru who enchants people and guides them predominantly with his writings.
Om Swami doesn’t appreciate the way present day spiritual leaders or sadhgurus behave. The superlatives that are attached to their characters in real life as well as in written words actually disappoints Om Swami and says “I’m not one of them.I have no desire to glorify myself in a third-person narrative.”
Om Swami believes in being simple, he doesn’t conform to any traditional code of being monk. He is of firm belief that people should project themselves in whatever way they are and not to make up for the occasions. This is the reasons, he appears with the robes that he is most comfortable with and does not try to imitate other so-called sadhgurus. “I remain non-traditional, independent and unchained,” he explains.
He has devoted his entire life to meditation and tantra. Om Swami is known for his writings – his books and his blog. He doesn’t ask people to read them and follow them. He leaves it on people to make use of them or not. Moreover he warns everyone not to follow him in any ways. He elaborates, “Don’t follow me or anyone else. Like a honeybee takes the nectar from a flower and goes back to its hive, take knowledge or wisdom from any source but go back to your inner voice. Discover your own truth, walk your own path. That alone will set you free.”
My achievement is not what I have,
My introduction is not what I do,
It is but who I am.
A nobody.
I sing I laugh I dance I clap,
A speck of dust in the infinite creation,
A vast ocean in the tiny dew drop,
A Himalayan stream,
The still mountain,
I am That.
So are you.
Compassion is my religion and love, my only philosophy.
The Ashram
The ashram is located on a tranquil property in the lap of Mother Nature, situated next to an ever-murmuring river called Giri Ganga. Tall, lofty mountains, lush green valleys and a starlit sky are the silent keepers of this ashram. The ashram is not open year-round as we currently do not have the necessary resources to provide the basics to its visitors. Gradually, as more infrastructures is built, we will be able to open it for longer duration. Please check out the Events page to see the dates when the ashram is open for you to visit. This serene ashram is in Himachal Pradesh, about 30 kilometers from Solan or roughly 100 kilometers from Chandigarh.
Social Intitiatives
The ashram is involved in a number of social causes for the local villagers, most of whom remain below the poverty line. We are always seeking ways to enhance the social and economic development of the locals. Every winter, blankets and other warm clothing are distributed amongst them. After a wave of interest from a number of visitors who wish to contribute to their well being, we have initiated the following programs:
Dispensary – Sri Hari Chikitsa Kendra
They have a small full-fledged dispensary where we provide free medical consultation and some basic medication to the villagers. There are no health facilities nearby. The closest hospital is in Solan which is roughly forty kilometers away. Currently, few doctors are volunteering to travel all the way to the ashram from Solan once a week. They are looking forward to grow and offer free healthcare to all the villagers most of whom live below the poverty line.
Gaushala — Cowshed
They have at present eleven cows and seven calves at the moment, which require constant care in order to maintain a healthy and clean environment.
Silai Kendra — Stitching Centre
To empower local women and create a sustainable livelihood for them is through starting a stitching centre where they can learn to how to stitch clothes. The purpose of the stitching centre is to provide the women with valuable skills and knowledge so they may have an opportunity to earn income. Ashram is looking for more volunteers and contributers who believe in the values imparted similar to the Swami
