The historical Madhukeshwara temple in Banavasi town, Karnataka is in need of immediate attention. The historical temple is in pathetic conditions due to the negligence of the officials. The roof of the temple is leaking raising concerns among the devotees and archeologists.
The iconic temple, built on the banks of Varada river is a 9th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is also popularly known as Dakshina Kashi. The temple is maintained by Archaeological survey of India (ASI) Dharwad Division. The temple has beautiful sculptures around it. Not just the main temple but the sculptures and the small temples around the main structure too need immediate action, sources say.
According to the sources, the temple authorities have been reporting about the roof leakage to ASI since last four years but the the officials at the ASI have not responded. Mudhukeshwara Temple is one of the ain tourist attraction in the Dakshina Karnataka.
Devotees and the Temple authorities are worried that the negligence continues the rich heritage, history of the Temple shall be lost and can never be repaired. As this being the month of Shravan, the Shiva temple will attract more tourists, and the authorities are concerned that the sculptures of the main deities and designs which are beautifully sculpted in stones inside the temple, reflects our art, culture and heritage will shock the devotees.
Sources say that the ASI has constructed a building in the town 4 years ago but lies unused till date. The building was supposed to be a museum to preserve the heritage and sadly till today the historical inscriptions are lying on the ground sans care. Hoping the authorities realize the importance of preserving the history and restore the temple to its old glory.
