Making of a Hatha Yogi : FULL SERIES : Follow and Become a Hatha Yogi
The Isha Hatha Yoga Teacher Training program began, as it does every year, on Guru Purnima. Designed by Sadhguru, this training will equip participants to transmit classical hatha yoga in its purest form, as it has been handed down for thousands of years. Join us throughout the intense 21-week journey, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a hatha yogi.
The trainees have settled into to the Isha Hatha Yoga Teacher Training program and are getting into the routine of twice-a-day hatha yoga sessions. The trainees have recently begun the practice of Surya Kriya, a potent yogic process of tremendous antiquity.
On Shivarathri, an auspicious day that happens once a lunar month, the trainees attended the Pancha Bhuta Aradhana in the Dhyanalinga, a powerful process to cleanse the five elements within the system. Later that week, many of the trainees went for the Inner Engineering retreat at the ashram. In addition to the class aspects, they were initiated into the powerful Shambhavi Mahamudra practice.
Earlier this week, the trainees took a trip to the ancient Perur temple in Coimbatore, for a glimpse of the intricacies and science of temple building. On the way back, they stopped by at a farm and enjoyed food and games with each other, in the company of honey bees and a breathtaking backdrop of mountains. They have also been learning Angamardana, a powerful exercise system rooted in yoga. Angamardana will supplement the other Hatha Yoga practices that the trainees have been learning and practicing on a daily basis.
This week, the teacher trainees had the opportunity to spend an evening with Sadhguru. Interacting with Sadhguru in a Q&A session, they received many detailed answers, as Sadhguru spoke at length about various aspects of Hatha Yoga. With these phenomenal insights, the evening was indeed a treat for all the hatha yogis, to be in the presence of the master.
The first week of September included quite a different kind of experience for the trainees, as they attended the Isha Gramotsavam, a celebration of village life that showcases the essence of rural Tamil Nadu. Through an elaborate display of rural art, drama, dance, music and food specialties, the event highlights the role of sports in rural life. The hatha yoga teacher trainees were part of the 60,000-strong crowd that attended this mega event. Once the proceedings were over, they had a chance to do their daily hatha yoga practices on the grounds.
In the Isha Hatha Yoga Teacher Training program, all trainees’ practices are corrected individually. In Upa-yoga, Surya Kriya, and yogasanas, all postures are looked at to see the trainees understand the fundamentals of each and every practice.
This week we follow one of our Hatha Yoga Teacher Trainees and find out his experience of a typical day in the Isha Hatha Yoga Teacher Training.
During the past week, the trainees got in touch with Mother Earth during the “Prithvi Prema Seva” at the Isha Yoga Center. They also went for a walk to a nearby temple and did their hatha yoga practices there. Another day, Sounds of Isha gave an exclusive performance for the trainees, who danced, clapped and sang along!
During the training, the trainees have been going through sessions on Siddha Vaidya, an ancient system of medicine that originated in South India. This will help the trainees gain a better understanding of the human system through the yogic perspective. In the last week, the trainees went on an excursion to Anuvavi Subramaniyar Temple, an ancient temple near Coimbatore, which is significant for the medicinal flora that surrounds it.
