No resolve on control over Churches in Kerala

Recently Supreme Court has given a judgment upholding the Kerala high court order that the standoff between Syrian Orthodox Church and Jacobite faction be resolved in accordance with a 1934 constitution of the Malankara Association.

The litigation is regarding the control of around 2,000 individual churches between the Orthodox faction of Syrian Orthodox Church the Jacobite faction. Including the famous Kolenchry St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church.

In its Judgement the Court has allowed Syrian Orthodox Church to conduct administration and prayers in around 1,400 churches. Expressing the joy over the Judgement the faction of Syrian Orthodox Church known as Malankara Orthodox Syrian church, has taken out a Victory rally, terming the verdict as the Significant one and urged the government to implement the court verdict soon.

Meanwhile the Jacobite faction of the Malankara Church has said that there is a lack of clarity in last week’s Supreme Court verdict upholding the 1934 Constitution of the Church and denying the church group its right to offer prayers in the disputed churches. The church will approach the Supreme Court seeking more clarity as the court verdict is on a question faith.
