Pope Audio Message – Thanks Well Wishers
Pope Francis on Thursday sent his first audio message since being hospitalised for double pneumonia nearly three weeks ago, expressing thanks “from the bottom of my heart” to well-wishers around the world who have offered their support.
Pope Francis has released an audio message thanking well-wishers worldwide for their prayers, marking his first public communication since being hospitalized with double pneumonia three weeks ago.
The brief message, recorded on Thursday from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, was broadcast to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the nightly Rosary prayer.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for my health from the square. I accompany you from here,” the Pope said in his native Spanish, speaking softly with labored breaths. “May God bless you and the Virgin protect you. Thank you.”
Faithful Gather in Prayer
Pilgrims have been gathering in St. Peter’s Square every evening since the 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized on 14 February. Hundreds of people applauded upon hearing his message.
On Friday, the Vatican reported that the Pope had a “calm night” of rest and woke up just before 8 a.m. However, doctors remain cautious about his recovery.
Pope’s Health and Treatment
Initially diagnosed with bronchitis, Francis’ condition developed into pneumonia in both lungs, requiring extensive treatment. Double pneumonia is a serious infection that inflames and scars both lungs, making breathing difficult.
The Vatican has been providing twice-daily health updates. As of Thursday, Francis’ condition was stable for a third consecutive day, though doctors remain uncertain about his progress.
Longest Absence from Public Life
The Pope has not been seen in public since entering the hospital, marking his longest absence in his 12-year papacy. He missed the formal Ash Wednesday celebrations and his usual Sunday Angelus prayers.
The Vatican confirmed that Cardinal Michael Czerny will stand in for Pope Francis and lead Mass for the first Sunday of Lent this weekend.
Speculation on the Pope’s Future
Francis has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, particularly due to a history of lung infections. As a young adult, he suffered from pleurisy and had part of one lung removed.
His prolonged hospitalization has fueled speculation about a potential resignation, similar to his predecessor, Benedict XVI. However, no official statements have been made regarding such a possibility.
