Exploring Paschima Pratana Sthiti Asanas
We are back with another Iyenger yoga based workshop by The UrbanYogi – Mukesh Banka. Adding to our series of workshop with him to help us explore & understand alignment of various asana using techniques of Iyenger yoga. Exploring पश्चिमप्रतन स्थिति आसन (PaschimaPratana Sthiti Asanas)
Paschima means back, Pratana means extention, Sthiti means position, and of asanas means poses. In this workshop we would explore the most basic form of spinal movements use in our daily lives – the forward bending and try to understanding how to improve our understanding about पश्चिमप्रतन स्थिति आसन or forward bending poses.
Yogasanas have often been thought of as a form of exercise. We have to understand that they are not exercises but techniques which place the physical body in positions (asanas) that cultivate awareness, relaxation, concentration and meditation. Part of this process is the development of good physical health by stretching, massaging and stimulating the pranic (energy) channels and internal organs – so the practice of asanas can be complementary to exercise. The asanas are designed to have specific effects on the glands & internal organs and so alter electro-mechanical energy in the nervous system.
As the only true biped mammals on the planet, humans are also earth’s least mechanically stable creatures. Fortunately, the disadvantage of having a bowling-ball-weighted cranium balancing on top of the whole system is offset by the advantage of having that big brain; it can figure out how to make the whole thing work efficiently—and that’s where yoga can help. The vertebral bodies transmit compressive forces to the discs, which resist compression by pushing back. The column of arches transmits tension forces to all the attached ligaments which resist stretching by pulling back. In short, the structural elements of the spinal column are involved in an intricate dance that protects the central nervous system by neutralizing the forces of tension and compression.
All these above adaptations were designed for a “hunter-gatherer” body and not that of a “desk-jockey) staying rooted in a chair for long hours. With age and prolonged unnatural strains on one side of the spine and associated structures the spine can become weak and loose its intrinsic balance and cause various spinal issues or back pains. The most basic movement of the spine; flexion or forward bending is the one that emphasizes its primary curve (the kyphotic curve present primarily in the thoracic spine). It’s no accident that the yoga pose that most completely exemplifies spinal flexion is called the child’s pose.
In this workshop we would explore PaschimaPratana Sthiti Asanas in detail, from the most humble to the most demanding yet soothing and how to modify them to address our specific requirements. We would also learn how the use of props can enable any practitioner, from beginners to advanced, to hold postures without strain or discomfort and how we can adapt these pose to address our requirements, strengths and limitations.
Join Mukesh Banka for a learning and transformative experience who would share his passion with you, hoping that you would also love yoga as much as he does. He has a lot to share from his long study and experience. So do join us in this journey to the ins & outs of PaschimaPratana Sthiti Asanas.
