Spiritual leader Dada Vaswani today passed away at the age of 99 in Pune. He was chief of Sadhu Vaswani Mission in Pune that is named after his uncle TL Vaswani. Acclaimed as a humanitarian, philosopher, educator, orator and non-sectarian spiritual leader, Vaswani was also known for promoting vegetarianism and animal rights.
Vaswani was born on August 2, 1918 in Pakistan’s Hyderabad city in a Sindhi family. He studied MSc in Physics and also worked as a teacher at St Mira’s College in Pune for some time.
Dada JP Vaswani has millions of followers worldwide, including eminent personalities like Dr Niranjan Hiranandani, Manju Nicchani, and Hinduja brothers. He has written more than 150 books on spiritualism and other topics. In fact his thesis ‘The scattering of X-Rays by Solids’ was examined by Nobel laureate CV Raman.
Vaswani had initiated a global peace initiative, ‘The Moment of Calm’. His birthday is also observed as World Forgiveness Day. He also gave speeches at the British House of Commons in London, the Global Forum of Spiritual Leaders in Oxford, the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, and the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders at the United Nations in New York.
The spiritual leader had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leader LK Advani in September 2016 during his visit to Delhi.
In 2017, PM Modi had wished Vaswani on his 99th birthday via video conference. “We are fortunate to receive the blessings of Dada Vaswani on his birthday. Just like his followers, I have also experienced Dada’s calm smile and simplicity. I have had the opportunity of discussing several issues of paramount importance, such as nation building and social responsibilities, with Dada at a religious conference in United Nations. In Delhi, too, we held talks regarding several topics, such as education and health,” Modi had said praising Vaswani.
In May this year, President Ram Nath Kovind had a visit to the mission to inaugurate the Sadhu Vaswani International School. Senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani is a frequent visitor to the mission. Acclaimed as a humanitarian, philosopher, educator, orator and non-sectarian spiritual leader, Dada Vaswani had captivated the hearts of millions of people worldwide. He was also into promoting vegetarianism.
His regular discourses at the mission premises attracted people from different walks of life. Vaswani was a brilliant student, but he later gave up a career in academics to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious uncle and guru, Sadhu T L Vaswani, who had set up the charity organisation. His mortal remains have been kept at the mission to enable people to pay their last respects.
The Sadhu Vaswani Mission was planning a big celebration on his 100th birthday next month on August 2, 2018.
