Pushpnjali held for Vengamamba on 200th Anniversary

A Pushpanjali was held On the occasion of 200th Death Anniversary of saint poetess Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba, at MR Palle circle in Tirupati on Tuesday.

The floral tributes were offered to Vengamamba life size statue by Dr KJ Krishna Murthy, the Vengamamba Project co-ordinator. He remembered the great literary works penned by the saint poetess. On the occasion he also reminded that the Poetess was the pioneer of  Annaprasadam in Tirumala.

Later in the evening special devotional programmes have been organised at Annamacharya Kalamandiram where the artistes have presented some of the great songs written by Vengamamba.

Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba, was a 18th century Telugu poet and staunch devotee of Lord Venkateswara,  who wrote numerous poems and songs on the Lord.

Venkamamba was born into a Brahmin family in 1730 in the Tarikonda village of Andhra Pradesh state. Her parents were Krishnayamatya and Mangamamba. Since childhood, she was an ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara and her devotion made the villagers believe that she was insane. Married at a very early age, she lost her husband Venkatachalapathi and became a child-widow. However, she refused to accept anyone but the Lord as her husband and continued to dress as a married woman. She studied yoga sciences under Acharya Subrahmnayudu and became a yogini. As a result, she faced resentment of the local priest in Tarikonda, and shifted to Tirumala. She was welcomed by the priest and descendants of Annamayya, all who had heard of her devotion prior to her move.
