Na Tera, Na Mera, Yeh Dera!

Dear People of India,

As we sit in our homes sipping the evening chai watching the eerily disturbing footage of violence perpetrated by the followers of a self proclaimed godman, almost each one of us is disgusted and terrified. We all agree on the irrationality of it, the lax government response and the bleak future of India that is reflected through this event. This is a rare event when we as Indians agree on something. With our dozen religions and hundreds of languages and varied preferences, we are quick to pick sides, often against each other.

This unison is powerful in its uniqueness and strength. Despite the horrendous event that led to it, it is an opportunity for introspection.

Let’s consider the example of alcohol. It  enjoys huge popularity as a drink all across the world. It comes in different forms and flavours. It is (arguably) a way to celebrate your happiness and also helps overcome pain & sorrow. It has a lot of fans and some critics. But almost all of us agree that it is good only when consumed in moderation. Nobody appreciates a drunkard lying next to a sewer- mumbling, vomiting, insensible.

We have to ask ourselves if we as a nation have collectively become that man- only drunk on religion. Religion could mean different things to different people (or nothing to some). But it undoubtedly has a huge role to play in deciding our way of life. It helps us sail through happiness and sorrow just like alcohol. We consume it in small portions everyday. Maybe this metaphor could be extended to say that Ram Rahim opened a local ‘theka’ (read dera) with a SALE board on and people got really wasted. One has to make up such a justification to believe that a human being known for being the only species to possess critical thinking could be so besotted with another man like him who claims to have some divine  power. If you believe in any sort of creator how can you not keep faith in him that he made everyone equal. How are millions of people willing to give their lives for a convicted criminal might make for an interesting research topic in human behaviour but it is shameful for the land we call our country. Just imagine the humiliating headlines that international newspapers around the world will publish about us tomorrow. ‘We the people’ gave ourselves the Constitution we don’t believe in.

So let this common feeling of disgust unite us. Let this display of savagery and blind faith not define us. Let this event not reduce to a twitter trend for a day like #ChandigarhStalking or #GorakhpurDeaths. Let #RamRahimVerdict become #RememberReligiousViolence. Because it is the same blind faith that kills Akhlaqs for beef or school kids in Peshawar. It is our tendency to value beliefs more than lives that causes Ayodhyas or Kashmirs. We create the monsters who loot and rape and murder and then fly away in helicopters while we are left on ground in blood and soil and fire.

We need to think about our fellow men, our children and ourselves before we sacrifice ourselves in the name of a man or a faith. We are humans first and that is why we are united in feeling of gloom today. Let this unison mean something.

धर्म कब तक इन अपराधियों को बचाने का कंबल बनता रहेगा… रामनामी ओढ कर और राम नाम रख कर जितना इन लोगों ने राम को बदनाम किया है उतना कहीं और नहीं हुआ… चीहे वो आसाराम हो रामपाल हो या राम रहीम… अब स्वयंभू भगवानों से छुटकारा चाहिए…. धर्म अब जीने की पद्धति बने किताबों से निकल कर असल जिंदगी में ….सिर्फ राजनीति और वोट का जरिया ना बने धर्म… राम रहीम का और इनके जैसे लोगों का बेनकाब होना धर्म के लिए अच्छा है

ये निर्णय बहुत पहले ही आ जाना चाहिए था। अब सभी की निगाहें सजा़ पर टिकी हैं। सज़ा ऐसी होनी चाहिए कि फिर से कोई इस तरह का बाबा बनने की हिम्मत न कर सके।
