Yoga at 11,562 Feet: NISR Hosts a High-Altitude Event in Leh

The National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR) in Leh organized a remarkable yoga event to kick off the 100-day countdown to the 11th International Day of Yoga. Held at a stunning altitude of 11,562 feet (3,524 meters) amidst the snow-capped Himalayas, the event gathered staff, students, and yoga enthusiasts for a soulful practice based on the Common Yoga Protocol, developed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of Ayush.

Dr. Padma Gurmet, Director of NISR, underscored the transformative nature of yoga, stating, “Yoga is not just a practice; it is a way of life that nurtures both the body and the mind.” His words echoed the timeless connection between traditional healing and modern wellness.

Adding depth to the occasion, Ms. Tsewang Lhamo, a yoga instructor from the Mahabodhi International Yoga and Meditation Centre in Leh, spoke about yoga’s ability to enhance physical vitality, mental clarity, and emotional well-being.

This event forms part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Ayush to raise awareness and inspire participation ahead of the 2025 International Day of Yoga. Key milestones in this initiative include synchronized yoga demonstrations at 10,000 locations worldwide, global partnerships to host yoga at iconic landmarks, and the establishment of 1,000 community yoga parks.

By organizing this high-altitude session, NISR has beautifully showcased the universal appeal of yoga, its ability to thrive in diverse environments, and its power to unite people in the shared pursuit of health, harmony, and inner peace.
