‘Plastic ban’ campaign a success at Meenakshi temple, Madurai
The ban imposed on Plastic on January first this year in the Chithirai Streets in Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple, Madurai is a success, said the Corporation commissioner S Aneesh Sekhar.
Till recently the streets leading to the Iconic temple of Meenakshi Temple were littered around an unholy environment for the visiting devotees. The devotees have welcomed the ban as the results can be seen around the iconic Temple which is a popular tourist attraction and attracts lakhs of people year round.
Now the shop keepers very little plastic waste, tea shops and eateries are putting away their used paper cups and plates into the bins, provided by the corporation. Since officials are conducting surprise checks and slap fines if banned plastic ware was used, shopkeepers are trying to adhere to the rule. The corporation employees are sweeping the streets and clearing the garbage four or five times a day. Speaking to the media commissioner said that the plastic ban is a success they will now concentrate on separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
